When assessing homes prior to working on design projects, I frequently see functional mirrors in places that should have fashionable mirrors. One such place is over the mantle. If you are going to use a functional mirror over a fireplace mantle, check to see if it reflects something pretty, such as a chandelier. You do not want to look in the mirror and see the pickets of your staircase. I prefer fashionable mirrors over fireplaces such as the Aria or Raindrops mirror found on http://www.pinkdoordecor.com/. Functional mirrors work wonders in small spaces. The reflection makes the space appear larger. You can use a functional mirror anywhere, just make sure you pay attention to what is being reflected.
