Clutter Solutions for Your Home Office by Posh Interiors

Phillip Wood Desk
In a few blogs back, I showed you how using a clutterologist to help you get your space in order can be a huge time saver.  This is especially true if you have gone into avoidance mode when it comes to clearing your clutter.
I had a chance to catch-up with Lauriann Stepp, the clutterologist out of Atlanta, and asked her to share with us, "How to Tackle the 5 Main Concerns People Have with Their Home Office Space"?

How do I create a functional mail process?
Try to open and sort mail daily (5 minutes) since piled up monthly mail creates stress and takes much longer (5 hours) to process later.  Every piece of daily mail is only 1 of 3 categories: ACTION, ARCHIVE or ADIOS!!  ACTION are bills/follow up items to remain on the desk top in clear view.  ARCHIVE are references to be filed away like bank statements.  ADIOS items are trash, recycle or shred.

How do I set up my home office space?
A functional home office should include the proper size/shape desk (L-shape desks offer the most useful space).  Always sit with your back to the wall looking into the room so you can see the window or door from your chair - this represents the command position in Feng Shui.  You will also need a bookcase and file cabinet within easy access while sitting at the desk for efficient and frequent use.  Sufficient lighting and an inspiring decor are also important to maintain productivity.

How do I create a filing system?
Remember to keep papers vertically filed rather than horizontally piled.  Line up the folder tabs in the front lined up in the same row.  This creates less visual stress of your eyes rather than darting back and forth to read labels.  You may arrange them alphabetically or in color coded categories - whichever you prefer.  Paper should be opened flat, not folded in envelope, this uses less space.

How do I maintain a daily system for getting stuff done?
Are you a big picture person (the most common personality of those who struggle with paper clutter) or a detail oriented support person? It is ok to have someone help you maintain the small detailed tasks on a regular basis (filing,
etc.)  When attacking your long TO DO list, only focus on 3-5 items per day taken from the master list.

Where can I store my office supplies?
If using a bedroom for your home office, use the closet for office storage with a free standing shelf or install shelving.  You can also use decorative storage boxes on the bookshelves for small supplies.  Remove all non-office related items from room.

I welcome your feedback and comments on all of my blogs. The process is pretty simply.  Go to the bottom of the blog and click on the comment buttom.  Scroll down the menu until you see a system you are using or simply click on anonymous.
