Before and After Salon Transformation

Last week I attended the relaunch of 1245 Salon and Spa located in Atlanta, GA, near Atlantic Station. The salon had just undergone a three month makeover done by yours truly, with the help of a few great people.

Terrell Dinkins, Designer & 1245 Salon and Spa Owner Tammy White

Makeover highlights included:
  • Adding a curved wall to create a separate lobby area
  • Applying blue and green paint colors to provide more of a spa feel
  • Installing two partition walls to expand the dryer room and create privacy in the shampoo area
  • Lightening up the floors from an earlier drab brown to a new light grey
  • Replacing commercial lights in the ceiling with other types of lighting, including pistachio green pendant lights and recessed lighting
  • Creating a photo gallery — what the designer calls a “wall of style” — of client head shots to showcase the work of the salon’s master stylists
  • Completing the salon’s look with new furnishings, decorative accessories and wall art
The makeover is a far cry from the salon’s original industrial-type feel. The space was cold, looked like a warehouse and did not match the name,"Salon and Spa".
Take a look at the before and after shots of the salon:

Grays Don't Have To Be Blue

I absolutely love playing with colors. Starting with a neutral pallet gives you a playground of freedom when it comes to color and patterns. One of my favorite neutral shades is gray. Gray doesn't have to be moody blue. Combine it with your favorite splash of fun and watch it come alive.

I am playing around with looks for a new project. Look at the beautiful shades of gray in the chair, lamp, pillows, and window hardware. Yes, it makes a beautiful neutral backdrop for the beginning of a project. The splash of orange gives the gray life. Think about it, you could add pretty much any vibrant splash to gray and it would look fab!
What's your favorite neutral color... Black, Gray, Cream, White?

Suit and Tie for Your Windows by Posh Interiors, LLC

Believe it or not but in the design business, there are truly high seasons when people want to make sure there homes are in "Posh Notch" condition for the holidays.  We are embarking upon that season. Towards the end of the summer and right before the holidays, designers get pretty busy, at least I do. I am starting on a couple of simple projects.  One of the small projects is adding window treatments to a client's family room and helping her select a few accessories to give the room a finished look.

Here's what I have known but encountered again.  Men just don't get the whole window treatment thing.  They can't believe the cost of fabric per yard and the cost of dressing a window.  When I explained to the husband of my client that custom window treatments are like purchasing a custom made suit for a guy, he got that concept.  The suit is made just for him and the window dressings are made to fit your window like no other curtain on a rack.  If you want a posh,  custom look, you have to pay for it.

Have you taken the plunge and put the suit and tie on your windows or are they still undressed?
I would love to hear from you.

Companies That Give Back

Today,  I want to give an unsolicited plug to Lowe's Home Improvement Stores.  There logo says, "Never Stop Improving".  I would like to say that they "Never Stop Giving".  I have begun a makeover project (I will give you details and an update in a later posting) and without hesitation, Lowe's jumped right in to assist with the project.  I spoke to some of the employees and many of them shared their personal stories of how the company had given supplies back to schools where their children attended.

Yes, I know many companies do give back.  Unfortunately, they go unrecognized because they are large corporations. Well today, I want to say thanks (oh, and an fyi, Lowe's was my second employer in high school. I worked in there back payroll office).

I have begun a few summer home improvement projects on top of the many items I am trying to balance on my plate.  My first stop for all of my supplies will be my neighborhood Lowe's Store.

Go-To Red the Fabulous Queen "C"

Every year designers get excited about the new Pantone Color of the Year announcement.  If colors were humans, they would all race to the front of the Crayola box shouting, "Pick Me, Pick Me".  Last year Tangerine Tango was all the rave.  For a long time brown was the new black and everyone wanted to trim out their home in chocolate brown.

When I think of all the colors that have fought their way to being the new "it" color, none have quite reign like the Queen "C" Red.  Oh, I love that red and so does styles of all kind.  Red is the queen of all colors.  She creates sizzle and vibrance wherever she lands, from furniture to clothing and even our ruby red lips.  She's the go to girl and throwback color when you need a little pop.

Here's a look at one of my favorite colors as she graces styles of all forms.

Kerry Washington

Most would agree that not many can wear red lip stick like the beautiful Kerry Washington.  No matter what she is wearing, we would all be drawn to her face and the pop of color on her lips.  It's because of her red lipstick, she can minimize her accessories. Imagine the chaotic energy that would be created if she were wearing busy earrings.

Crimson Chair from Pink Door Decor

This gorgeous chair would really create pop to a drab room.  It's not too bright in color that you would grow old of it after a few years.   Imagine this in a set of four surrounding a cocktail table!

Beautiful Red Hair Accessories for Wedding

Women are now going outside of the traditional pastel wedding colors. Spring reds are becoming popular wedding colors.

Although I love pink, red is my go-to color when I'm trying to create a little sizzle.
 What's yours?

Atlanta Luxury Hotels-Top Beauties

The months of April and May are pretty busy in the Dinkin's household.  We celebrate our wedding anniversary and my husband celebrates his birthday.  This year we decided to spend the weekend away from the kids and hang out in the city (I live in the suburbs of Atlanta south of the city).  We decided to stay at the Ritz Carlton in downtown Atlanta.  I fell in love with the lobby of this hotel.  It was a modern beauty. Exploring lobbies of luxury hotels is one of my favorite pastimes when I travel.

After seeing this lobby and lounge, I decided to take a look at the lobbies of some of the other luxury hotels in the city.  Here's a peek at a few of the Top Luxury Hotels in Atlanta according to US News and World Report , with my favorite The Ritz Carlton Atlanta shown first.

I would love to hear from you, especially if you have had a chance to stay at one of these hotels.

Tips and Trends for Stylish and Personalized Kids Rooms

I was very honored when asked to lend my opinion for an article that appeared in the April 2013 addition of Atlanta Home Improvement  magazine.  The article was so well written by Shandra Hill Smith that I thought I would share it with you, with the permission of the writer of course.
Thanks Shandra!

Kids Room Design

Tips and trends for stylish and personalized kids rooms
By Shandra Hill Smith
If you’re looking to transform a space for the little one in your life, a good starting point could be your child’s personal wish list. Creating a fabulous room for kids 12 and under calls for getting him or her “involved in the design process,” says Terrell Dinkins, residential interior designer and owner of Posh Interiors, LLC,
www.poshinteriorsllc.com,
in Atlanta.
Check in with your child to gauge what he or she likes, adds Dinkins: “Do they want a theme room? What colors do they like? The child might want a bright color for the wall. Mom might not like this idea. Come up with a compromise on the color and use the color in accessories. This is just a consideration if you do not want to change out the paint color on the wall in a few years.” While a theme may be a good idea, Dinkins and other design professionals suggest that you still choose carefully so you don’t end up with something the child grows out of quickly.
“The best designs are easily adaptive so they can evolve with the child,” says Dana Carvelli, design assistant at Atlanta’s Pineapple House Interior Design, www.pineapplehouse.com. Possibilities include incorporating the child’s hobbies or interests.
While the journey may prove exciting for both child and parent, be careful not to let enthusiasm — more than budget — drive you. “Don’t spend the entirety of your budget in the beginning,” adds Carvelli. “Allow a yearly budget where every three to six months something can be updated or added to keep him or her intrigued in the space.”

The latest trends

Bright and bold are the buzzwords when it comes to the latest trends in room designs for children. Today you’ll find “fun and bold geometric patterns such as chevron or stripes in rugs, bedding, walls or the back of a bookshelf,” says Wendy Beville, owner of Defining Spaces,
www.definingspacesinc.com, in Marietta.
“Bright colors and bold patterns are trends in general, but easily transfer to children’s rooms,” says Terri Ervin, regional director, Georgia, for Decorating Den Interiors, www.local.decoratingden.com/tervin. “One wall of a bold graphic wall covering will add a lot of fun to the room. Little girls seem to be drawn to black-and-white zebra print mixed with pink or turquoise.”
Bold colors such as pink and green “add contrast to other textures in the room and can really illustrate the child’s personality, where a color like gray can be more elegant and a lot more androgynous,” says Kristine Cupid, marketing assistant for Smyrna-based Design2Sell Interiors & Home Staging,www.homedesign2sell.com. Cupid also is a fan of vinyl wall decals. “You can get them in an array of different sizes and shapes like a tree from the floor to the ceiling or oversized cupcakes,” she says.
One source for these peel-and-stick coverings, Ervin points out, is WallPops, www.wallpops.com, which are designed for moving, reusing and repositioning. “They are inexpensive, colorful and easy to create a custom look,” says Ervin. “If your child decides they don’t like them anymore, they are very easy to change. Or if you move, they can be taken down and repositioned on a new wall.”
Another trend is personalization. “Personalizing is a great way to make the space feel like yours,” says Rachel Greathouse of Rachel Greathouse Design, www.rachelgreathousedesign.com. “Add a big painted letter to the door or monogram a favorite pillow.” Studio M Interiors,www.studiominteriors.net, chose a monogram wall appliqué to help make a tween’s bedroom her own during a recent project.

Mix it up
Since children’s rooms are multifunctional spaces for sleeping, playing, dressing and arts and crafts, Dinkins suggests parents also consider “mixing in what I would consider traditional adult-room accessories. We have seen the pretty chandeliers in girls’ rooms. Now people are using dome-shade overhead lighting and chandeliers in boys’ rooms. One of my favorite trends is using vintage pieces in place of traditional pieces.”
Furniture, says Vicki Gladle-Bolick, a certified interior decorator with Bolick Interiors, LLC,
www.bolickinteriors.com, in Atlanta, “is becoming more ‘grown-up’ with youthful touches. Homeowners don’t want cutesy kid spaces any longer, but want to ensure that the design evolves with their child, and that with a few minor changes over the years, the furnishings can take their kids well into their teenage years and beyond.” To achieve this, she says that the majority of the budget should go toward anchor pieces such as dressers, nightstands and desks.
Cupid agrees, adding “Use less expensive items like accent pieces, which can easily be changed in the future.” “Try your local flea market, garage sales and thrift stores for furniture,” says Greathouse. “After a little TLC and a fresh coat of paint or some new fabric, these pieces can save your budget and bring great character to the space.”
Another smart investment, says Jenny Warner, president of J. Thomas Designs,
www.jthomasdesigns.com, is window treatments. “Having room-darkening shades or drapes is great for naptime, sick days, going to bed in summertime when it is still light and kids think they should still be up, and maybe getting your kids to sleep a little longer on the weekend!”
Other touches may include a study or reading area with poufs, ottomans or oversized pillows, along with your child’s own artwork, family photos and gallery-wrapped canvas art.
“Whether it be a special piece that is showcased in a frame or gallery wrapped or a great area dedicated to displaying daily artwork, it makes them feel special and gives you a place to put projects that isn’t all over the fridge,” adds Warner. Also, “I think it is super important to have family photos in a child’s room. It reminds them of how loved they are and helps younger kids remember their relatives.”

Safety and storage

Whether you choose to work with a professional or take on a do-it-yourself role, think safety and storage, professionals warn. Children starting as young as three years old “are inclined to rough housing and active play,” Ervin says, “so I try to limit sharp corners and breakable materials,” by using metal or wood lamps versus glass, for example. “Storage is also an important feature. So much of kids’ toys, stuffed animals, etc., can create a messy look in a room. So having storage for those items helps eliminate the cluttered look and keep the items organized.”
“If you have a small space, try to use wall space for storage by adding floating shelves or cubbies,” says Annalisa Thomas, president and CEO of Oilo,www.oilostudio.com. “It’s also a good way to add dimension to a room if you have a huge empty wall.” Thomas also suggests picking furniture with solid or frosted-glass doors or bookshelves with baskets to conceal clutter.
You may find you’re ready to take on the project on your own — perhaps with a bit of design direction through a consultation with a professional. Or if going it alone proves too much, you can call on expert help, making sure to share your thoughts and your budget on the front end. Either way, the payoff will be a dream room your child can look forward to calling his or her own as a place to play, create and rest — even more reason to cherish those childhood years.

Pink and Orange: Sizzling Combination

Are you brave enough to handle it? Well the combination of Pink and Orange is the "Spring Thing." Depending on the room and of course your personality, these lively colors together can change the mood of any space and even the mood of the person who is wearing it.

If you are gradually adding this color to your decor, but can't quite imagine either color on your walls, start with a throw pillow.  You can always change out the pillow later if you don't like it.  Here's a great looking pink and orange pillow found at Pink Door Decor.

Martha Stewart
Adding a few textured throw pillows to this room by Martha Stewart adds more movement.  However, keeping all of the colors solid is a very safe way to incorporate the colors.

Better Homes & Garden

I love this room because many textures were used to add dimension.  Having the white back drop in my opinion is the best way to use any bright vibrant color combination.  You can always change out the accessories when a new trend is emerging (remember the chocolate and blue combination that was all the rave).

Better Homes & Garden
This room was done right!  Take your color from the floor to the ceiling.  I love it. It is simple and didn't take a lot to make it eye popping (books, fruit and flowers).

I would love your feedback.  Would you be willing to go out of your comfort zone and add bold bright colors to your room?

Wish-Make This Bedroom Into An Office

Many of us have empty rooms we wish we could convert into an office.  I just finished a small project helping a customer with that very wish of converting his empty space/spare room into an office.  As a designer, working on any project is usually a three step process.

The first step is finding out what you are working with.  In this case, it was an empty canvas and perhaps the wish of any designer. We like starting with empty shells.  I don't want to minimize the work that goes into completing a design project.  Yes, there are many steps between the three main steps, but for the most part, you have three steps. In the first step, you are trying to get a feel for what the client likes, their style and of course their budget.

The second main step involves presenting a concept to the client.  I like to call this refining likes and dislikes.  From this picture, the client loved the clock, striped curtains window hardware, metal table and the idea of having a lamp with a clear glass bottom.  As far as the desk was concerned, this client wanted one with a hutch.  They found one they liked and purchased it for the space.  Oh, he also loved the idea of incorporating his favorite color blue.

Here's the final look and the third step!  We repainted the room in a cool gray and toned down the bright white trim with an off white.  The striped curtains had hints of silver/blue mist, so adding various shades of blue was perfect and made for a great accent color.  The only thing that is missing is his computer.  At the time of this photo shoot, the lamp shade had not arrived so you cannot see the other side of the room where the club chair is positioned.  We did add a black club chair, a silver metal table and the clock pictured in the office board display. We also created a mini workstation next to his desk that has a dry erase/magnet board and very nice storage baskets.

Window treatments makes a world of a difference in any room.  You must dress your windows!  That's my final word.  Please dress-up your windows.  Notice how much larger the window looks with curtains.

2013 Home Project Goals

Have you started setting goals for 2013? We are through the first week of the year. We set goals for our mind, body and spirit. We even post resolutions on our bathroom mirrors for weight goals we want to set for the year (not a bad idea for myself). Why not write down home projects you want to complete for 2013.

This task doesn't have to be a daunting one. Create an outline or a goals list. Topics you might want to include on your home improvement list are as follows:
  •  Which room you would like to focus on?
  •  How do you want your space to feel?
  • Which areas do you want to organize?
  • Which home project will you complete this year?
I, for one have decided that my bedroom is way over due for a face lift...more like a modern day lift. It's still pretty because everything was custom made for the room.  It's just looking a little stale for me.  I am ready for a change!

To stimulate your mind, get inspired with pictures. One of the best places on earth now for inspiration is

Yes, Pinterest is an inspirational haven. I was reluctant to get on Pinterest (another password to memorize). Now I love it!  I just need to figure out when I will have time to get on it.

Good luck to you on your home project! Send me your comments and let me know what you plan on doing differently in your home in 2013.

Until Next Time
