2012 COLOR OF THE YEAR IS....? by Posh Interiors, LLC

Pantone Color Institute, a color matching company has throned Tangerine Tango as the 2012 color of the year.   Known as Pantone 17-463 among members of the interior and fashion design community (and simply "Tangie" to family and friends),tangerine tango is described by the color-matching company as "a vivacious, enticing hue," "a provocative go-getter" that's "a bit exotic, but in a very friendly, non-threatening way" and "a spirited reddish orange ... [s]ophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive."

I am sure you will see this color and variations of orange everywhere this spring from fashion to home decor.  Read more about the 2012 winner from this article:

Yes my friends, gold is back with a vengence. It is showing up in design showrooms and on the runways worn by high fashion models. I personally love how gold looks with traditional designs.  Imagine a gold mirror above a beautiful dark mahogany sideboard. This classic color adds glimmer and sparkle to any setting.

Take a look at these beautiful pieces found on http://www.pinkdoordecor.com/ and allow your eyes to be dazzled!

Trick or Treat has come and gone. We still have a few weeks before Thanksgiving.  Take down your Halloween decorations and add a little fall color to your front door, before you pull out the Christmas Wreath.

I found these gorgeous fall wreaths while roaming the internet.  I thought I would share with my readers.  The prices vary. Just click on the picture and it will take you directly to the link.

Let me know if you order one of these beauties.  I would love to get your feedback on the quality of the product and the delivery process (did your wreath arrive in good shape).

CANDLE LIGHT ON TABLETOPS by Posh Interiors, LLC

Ahhh, the nostalgia of Thanksgiving is right around the corner.  There will be many tabletops decorated during the holiday season.  Some with floral arrangements, but many tables will have the flicker of candles burning while making a holiday toast.  I do love the look of candles burning in a beautiful holder or hurricane.

Here are a few of my favorite handle holders.  They all vary in price.  The price quite frankly, stems from the material on the container.  The holders trimmed in polished nickel will probably out last the holders that are silver plated. The nickel holders also cost more (click on the photo for description and details).  Purchase what your budget will allow and enjoy the candle light!

I would love to hear from you.  How are you decorating your tabletop for the holidays?

CUSTOM FIT by Posh Interiors, LLC

I was out last week on an installation for custom window treatments.  It is amazing how you can create the illusion of a very large window with custom draperies.  If spacing permits, I always add at least an additional feet of width to my picture windows. The look is dramatic and quite frankly, helps take up wall space.

What if you are on a budget and cannot afford a designer to make custom window dressings?  Custom drapes are made to perfectly fit the window.  Here's a You Tube video I ran across that is great for DIY window projects.  This should be pretty helpful for those on a budget and want to tackle a project on their own: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aprFatGvbkA

Have you tried hanging your own draperies?  Let me hear your story.

PANSIES...THE SOLUTION TO EXTERIOR FALL COLOR by Posh Interiors, LLC

As a designer, I think it is equally important that the exterior of your home is as beautifully defined as the interior of your home. Yesterday, I was out in my yard planting pansies.  Once the bermuda turns brown and all of the leaves have fallen from the trees, the only sense of life remaining in your yard during the fall and winter months are the pansies. Oh, how pretty they look up against the wheat colored bermuda grass.

One of Georgia's most famous gardeners, Mr. Walter Reeves provides some great gardening tips on planting pansies:  www.walterreeves.com/landscaping/planting-pansies/

Few plants create color in a winter landscape better than pansies. Given a mid-October planting, pansies laugh at temperatures in the ‘teens. They are even known to bloom after a winter snowstorm. Growers produce 50 million pansies each year for the North Georgia market. Now is the time to concentrate on planting pansies well so they will reward you with bounteous blooms this winter and next spring.
SOFT SOIL In order for pansies to do their best, their roots must establish themselves quickly in your soil as it begins to cool. Imagine their difficulty trying to push through hard clay dirt! A pansy bed should be at least 25 percent composted material mixed with your native soil. A good recommendation is to pour one bag of soil conditioner over 10 square feet of bed and mix it into the soil eight inches deep.

SIZE DOES MATTER You’ll find more than one size of pansy plants at local garden centers. They offer 3 inch pots, four inch pots and six-packs of pansies from which to choose. It pays to know which size performs best in your area. South of Atlanta, where the fall tends to be a bit longer and warmer, the smaller plants in a six-pack have a few more days in which to grow roots large enough to support blooms for the winter. Planting those same six-pack plants in the colder parts of North Georgia would yield few blooms until the soil warms again in March. That does not mean that the smaller plants should never be planted – only that they take much more time to grow to a size that produces blooms. For the suburban Atlanta area, pansies that are sold with eighteen plants per plastic flat are most successful for prolonged blooms.

FEED REGULARLY – WITH THE RIGHT STUFF Since pansies will soon be growing in cold soil, their fertilizer needs will be quite different from flowers that grow during the summer. Summer fertilizers have urea, ammonium nitrate or some other source of nitrogen for the plant. That’s fine during the summer when the soil is warm. But in the winter, nitrate sources of nitrogen are better for plants. Look on the label of your fertilizer – if it says some of the nitrogen comes from nitrate, your pansies will benefit. Right now, you can use any of the water-soluble, powdered fertilizers (Miracle-Gro, etc.) to drench the soil around each plant once it is in the ground. When you fertilize monthly from November through March, nitrate-containing fertilizers would be best.

TINY BIT OF PROTECTION Pansies protect themselves during cold weather by temporarily wilting. The dry leaves are not damaged by cold; they recover nicely when warmer temperatures appear. But if the soil is frozen while dry, frigid winds howl across the leaves, pansy roots are unable to transport water back to the leaves. For this reason, keep a bale of pine straw handy during the winter. If a Siberian Express is forecast, cover all of your beds with a thin layer of straw. It will hold heat in the soil and it will shelter pansy leaves from the harsh winds."
I would love your comments.  Are you planting any flowers in your yard this fall?

SNAKESKIN...THE NEW RATTLE IN DESIGN by Posh Interiors, LLC

Move!  Get out the way Leopard and Zebra.  There's a new skin in town this fall and is taking the design world by storm.  Snakeskin is on the rise with vivid hues.  You can see this pattern from the fashion runways to the living rooms of those who want to dance to the beat of their own drum and get in on the latest design trends.

Here are a few hot pieces I found in the snakeskin print.  The colors are natural because I think this look is at its hottest in natural shades (even though I have found quite a few pieces in hues of pink, blue, orange and any shade under the rainbow).

I would love your feedback and thoughts.  Will you be adding any new snakeskin pieces to your home or wardrobe this fall?

COZY LIT FIRE by Posh Interiors, LLC- Atlanta Interior Design

I really get excited this time of the year.  The weather is turning cool and we mentally start getting in the mood for a cozy lit fire.  We don't have to settle for a faceless fireplace. Adding a screen creates a bit of interest and intrique to the flaming logs.

The prices of fireplace screens have a huge range. You have a choice whether you want to break your wallet and splurge or play it cheap and go chic.  You can also find them pretty much everywhere over the internet.  Some are of better quality than others.  I would suggest if you want one that will last for several seasons, purchase one made from iron or forged iron.

Here are a few I found from various retailers.  The prices vary.
It's time to decorate your mantle and fireplace for a cozy lit moment!

RUG LAYERING TREND by Posh Interiors, LLC-Atlanta Interior Design

Clients often ask me "Is it ok to layer rugs?" Not only is this ok, but this technique has been a trend for a very long time. So I guess you could say it's not really a new trend, just a way to add texture and interest to your floor.  Here are a few creative ways to layer rugs:
  • If you have neutral wall to wall carpeting in your room , add your favorite colored rug on top for a pop of color below your feet.
  • Use several small rugs together to create one large rug
  • Small area rugs are great for covering up old worn out carpet
  • My all time favorite look that has become a hot trend is adding a hide on top of a natural sisal rug.  The hides are thin and stays in place better with something underneath it.
If you are in the market for a good looking hide rug, go to http://www.pinkdoordecor.com/ . Try layering with a hide and let me know what you think of the look.

CUSTOM BEDDING by Posh Interiors, LLC-Atlanta Interior Design

I love a beautifully made bed.  No, I do not mind removing all of the pillows.  It is the size and shapes of the pillows that add to the welcoming feeling of an adorned bed.  You can buy many size pillows in the store and even find great bed-in-a-bag sets, but there is nothing like having custom pillows and covers made for your bedroom.

I have a king size bed and can never find anything to fit properly.  The plush pillow top mattress causes everything to look too short on the bed.  I did have my bedding custom made to fit (of course I would... I am a designer).

Here are a few of my favorite pillows for the bed.  I really love long bolster pillows matched with simple euros.  What's your favorite shaped pillow for the bed?

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PLEAT? by Posh Interiors, LLC-Atlanta Interior Design

This time of year gets pretty busy for me as a designer.  I am usually working on quite a few window treatment projects.  Many times, clients don't really know what they want.  There are so many different header pleats that the client can become confused when they are trying to figure out what they like.

Right now, drapery panels using the french pleat header is pretty popular.  This look isn't quite as formal as the traditional double or triple pinch pleat. The french pleat shows emphasis towards the top of the pleat, allowing for a more relaxed look below the pleat.  As a matter of fact, I have used this header on my last couple of drapery projects. On the front page of my website www.poshinteriorsllc.com , I used the french pleat on a linen fabric.

Here are a few of the different header pleats.  Take a peek, and let me know what's your favorite pleat?

HOT TREND IN DESIGN...MARBLEIZE by Posh Interiors, LLC-Atlanta Interior Design

The marbleize trend is everywhere this fall.  If you flip through any home or fashion magazine, you will see it.  Let's define this for my blog readers.  Marbleize is to give a marble like variegated finish to an object or material.  When it comes to fabrics, silks and other natural fibers are best for creating this finish.

As a designer, I would use this pattern sparingly in my decor.  The look is beautiful and should be allowed to make a statement and not compete with too many other patterns.  Too much of this look can definitely cause a dizzy spell.

Let's take a look at this old trend that is resurfacing back on the block!

Red Is Smokin Hot This Fall In Home Decor! by Posh Interiors, LLC Atlanta Interior Design

I receive quite a few home decor magazines as you could imagine.  What I am noticing this season in home decor is the color red. It is back with avengement!  One of my favorite colors to wear is pink, but I love decorating in red.  I have touches of red throughout my home.

Now is the time to change out your accessories and add a bit of red.  This color will take you up to spring. Check out this smoking red sofa from Crate and Barrel.  I love how this sofa looks.  You could even paint the room in a soft gray that would add major sizzle.  Your friends would be envious when they visit you this holiday season.

BIG STYLE...Small Space by Posh Interiors, LLC- Atlanta Interior Design

Atlanta is a haven for hot trendy condo's. Many city dwellers sacrifice space for the advantage of living in-town.  Just because your space is small, doesn't mean you must sacrifice style.  Here are a few tricks for getting BIG STYLE in a small space.

Add Draperies.  As a designer, I believe every window should be dressed.  Adding draperies to a window in a small condo can make the window double in size.  One trick to creating the illusional larger window is raising the draperies a few inches above the molding on the window.  You can also add an additional width of fabric on the sides of the draperies to create a wider looking window.  Check out my website at www.poshinteriorsllc.com and peruse my photo gallery for window designs.

Mirrors Are A Must.  Mirrors immediately add space to a room.  The mirrors reflect light; can serve as a window and even create a focal point in a room.  Decorative mirrors can also act as a piece of art.

Perfect Paint Palette.  Adding neutral paint on a wall is an old trick to making a small space appear larger.  In order to punch up the color in the room, throw in great colorful accessories from throw pillows to vases.  Here are a few of my favorite accessories found on www.pinkdoordecor.com

I would love to get your feed back on all of my blog topics.  Tell me what you think.

WINDOW BLING...THE HARDWARE by POSH INTERIORS,LLC- ATLANTA INTERIOR DESIGN

As a designer, fall season is usually the rush reason.  Everyone wants their house to look great for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I am in high demand for window treatments and designs.  Besides from selecting the fabric, making sure it flows and drapes perfectly, hardware selection is just as equally important.  I think the hardware gives you the opportunity to add a little "Bling" to your window.

Here are a few of my favorite finials from Design Elements that would look fantastic in a modern space or a room where you need to break up the wood tones. Let me know what you think!
